In the Beginning, a story beyond Borders

Description

<< Background >>Our partnership applied for this project driven by a commitment to fostering respect for individuals with intellectual disabilities and enhancing their quality of life. We aimed to promote equal opportunities, supported employment, and access to education, while empowering individuals to express their needs and capabilities. Collaboration with other organizations was seen as crucial for sharing experiences and building a network to advocate for the needs of people with intellectual disabilities globally. Through art, we aimed to promote awareness and understanding, addressing the societal attitudes towards intellectual disabilities. Overall, our goal was to leverage this project to create positive change and support individuals with intellectual disabilities in realizing their full potential.<< Objectives >>We aimed to achieve several key objectives through this project: - promoting respect and equal opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities, - fostering their empowerment and self-expression, - expanding our network of support through collaboration with other organizations, - raising awareness and understanding of intellectual disabilities through art, - facilitating positive societal attitudes towards this community. Our overarching goal was to create tangible improvements in the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities by addressing their needs, promoting their capabilities, and advocating for their inclusion in society.<< Implementation >>In addition to the establishment of Project Groups and visibility efforts, we facilitated effective communication through comprehensive project folder as well as monthly online meetings which ensured ongoing collaboration and quality assurance. Cultural exchange visits provided opportunities for immersive learning and collaboration on myth interpretation. Youth passes were issued to all our participating YWD students.Focus group meetings allowed for in-depth discussions and the sharing of best practices. Pre-departure orientations were tailored to ensure clear understanding and participation. Street theatre performances not only engaged YWDs in creative expression but also served as powerful tools for challenging societal stereotypes. School visits further reinforced our commitment to fostering inclusivity and breaking down barriers for individuals with intellectual disabilities. These activities collectively aimed to create a supportive and empowering environment, transcending boundaries and promoting positive perceptions of intellectual disabilities within our communities.<< Results >>The project yielded several outcomes: Cultural exchange visits fostered understanding, while focus group meetings facilitated best practice sharing. Street theater empowered YWDs and challenged stereotypes, and school visits engaged local communities, promoting positive perceptions of intellectual disabilities. The pre visit training of YWD assisted them to better understand the workings of a project work team and empowered them. These results signify meaningful strides toward respect, empowerment, and inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
