Food for Change

Description

"<< Background >>We applied for the ""Food for Change"" project to address critical needs identified among young people, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic exacerbated issues such as social isolation, mental health struggles, homesickness, and anxiety about the future. Many young people found themselves disconnected from their communities and uncertain about their personal and financial stability. This project aimed to rebuild that lost sense of community by using shared food experiences as a powerful tool for social change. Food, as a universal medium, creates connections across cultures, and we wanted to harness this to promote intercultural dialogue, empower youth, and strengthen social ties. The specific needs we aimed to address, based on empathy interviews with young people, included mental health and well-being, homesickness, financial instability, employment, intersocial relationships, environmental issues, fear of the future, and the need for tolerance across religious and cultural differences. By offering safe spaces to explore these issues, we hoped to foster a greater sense of belonging, personal empowerment, and community resilience.<< Objectives >>Our primary objective was to foster social inclusion, promote diversity, and encourage tolerance among young people by using food as a medium for intercultural dialogue. We aimed to prevent discrimination and radicalization by creating opportunities for young people to engage in meaningful conversations about identity, belonging, and community.Additionally, we sought to build the capacity of organizations and youth workers to engage with these issues through innovative approaches. By equipping them with resources like the “Recipes for Conversation” eBook and the Trainer Guide, we aimed to ensure that they could replicate our methodology in their own contexts. The project also focused on supporting young people’s mental health and well-being, enhancing their sense of social responsibility, and empowering marginalized youth through the creation of inclusive and open spaces for dialogue.<< Implementation >>The implementation of the Food for Change project started with national assessments and focus groups across partner countries to understand the post-pandemic needs of young people. Through qualitative empathy interviews, we gathered insights on mental health, community engagement, and key challenges, providing a strong basis for the project’s core activities.Next, we developed the Dialogue Dinner methodology, where participants shared meals and engaged in conversations on topics like mental health, inclusion, and diversity. These dinners used food as a medium to foster intercultural dialogue and build community. In June 2023, we held a Training of Trainers (ToT) event in Copenhagen, where trainers and youth workers from partner countries were trained on how to implement the Dialogue Dinners. The event featured hands-on workshops and live testing of the methodology.Following this, 36 Dialogue Dinners were held across six countries, sparking discussions on mental health and social inclusion. The success of these dinners led many partners to continue hosting them in their communities.Additionally, we developed an online platform with all the projects resources and educational materials.<< Results >>The Food for Change project resulted in a wide range of tangible and intangible outputs, making a lasting impact on both participants and communities. One of the key outputs was the successful creation of the “Recipes for Conversation” eBook, which compiled the recipes and conversation topics used during the dialogue dinners, which have reached over 170 young people. This resource, alongside the “Trainer’s Guide”, is designed to help others replicate the Dialogue Dinner format, ensuring that the project's approach to intercultural dialogue continues beyond its duration. The project also produced 21 additional interactive online tools, and an accessible platform, helping to disseminate the project’s outcomes to a broad audience. All project results and additional materials can be found on foodforchange.euOur dissemination efforts were particularly impactful, reaching over 420,000 people through various channels, including social media, newsletters, local newspapers and websites. This far exceeded our initial goal of reaching 20,000 people. Our multiplier events gathered 175 participants. The Dialogue Dinner were so well received that many of our partners have committed to continuing the events."
