Sobre la posibilidad de una democracia "post-democrática" y universal

Abstract

La democracia se ha desarrollado en diversas sociedades, aunque no haya llegado a madurar en otras, sobre la base de una limitación muy precisa (fuente de otras más, pero también de sus posibilidades reales), a saber, la de las fronteras nacionales. En la medida en que las formas de la nación –tanto por razones políticas internas como por causas tecnológicas o militares externas- estén en crisis lo estará la democracia que en ellas se asienta. El ideal de la democracia ha de afrontar, por tanto, críticas que penden tanto de su posibilidad en los límites de una comunidad política como aquellas otras que emanan de su relativa ineficacia para garantizar un orden social suficientemente justo, pese a que se reconozca la peor condición de fórmulas –autoritarias o revolucionarias- alternativas. Tanto, pues, desde el punto de vista de sus límites externos como desde sus carencias internas, el ideal democrático deberá ser repensado para ser propuesto como forma política precisa en el horizonte de una humanidad cada vez más críticamente enfrentada al ideal de su unidad.
