Abstract

El suelo contiene la mayor cantidad de carbono orgánico (Ca) de la superficie de la Tierra (2,157-2,293 Pg), el doble del presente en la atmósfera (760 Pg), y de 2 a 3 veces mayor que el de todos los organismos vivientes en el conjunto de ecosistemas terrestres (González-Vila y Almendros, 2003, y referencias incluidas). La cantidad y calidad de la materia orgánica del suelo (MaS) puede afectarse por incendios forestales incontrolados y por prácticas de manejo basadas en quema controlada de arbustos o residuos de cosechas en suelos agrícolas. En general, los efectos a largo plazo del fuego sobre las propiedades fisicas y químicas de los suelos pueden ser más relevantes que los debidos a factores biológicos, geológicos y climáticos. Se ha comprobado que la destrucción de la vegetación por el fuego es la principal responsable de una importante degradación de los horizontes orgánicos del suelo, que conduce a severos cambios en las propiedades fisico-químicas de suelos afectados por incendios, incluyendo alteraciones en los contenidos totales de carbono orgánico (Ca), N, fracciones húmicas y sustancias repelentes al agua (lípidos) (DeBano et al., 1970; 1976, 1977ab; Savage et al., 1972; Viro, 1974; Dunn y Conrad, 1977; Giovannini et al., 1983, 1987, 1988; Almendros et al., 1984a; Vega et al., 1985).
