Las especies del género Fasciola son causantes de la fasciolosis, parasitosis sanitaria y económicamente importante, que afecta a un gran número de especies animales, principalmente rumiantes. Además, el hombre puede también infectarse con el parásito, lo que confiere a esta patología una dimensión especial por su carácter zoonósico.
