Abstract

La vida y obra del marino y científico Jorge Juan (1713-1773) han sido objeto de estudio en numerosas publicaciones académicas. El alicantino participó en la Misión Geodésica hispanofrancesa a la Audiencia de Quito (1734-1745) para medir un grado de meridiano terrestre a la altura del ecuador. Gracias a aquel cálculo, se pudo conocer mejor la forma y dimensiones de la Tierra, que se demostró estar achatada en los polos. A lo largo de su vida, Jorge Juan auspició reformas en la construcción naval, participó en misiones diplomáticas y publicó importantes obras científicas sobre náutica, astronomía, cartografía y geografía

La exposición bibliográfica tuvo lugar en Biblioteca Americanista de Sevilla (REBIS, CSIC), del 22 al 26 de enero de 2024
