La exploración espacial ha puesto el foco sobre la fotosíntesis artificial. Es fácil entender por qué: mantener la vida en el espacio depende de fuentes de oxígeno, agua y energía, y este milenario proceso podría resolver los retos. Las investigaciones realizadas durante décadas para desentrañar las claves que hacen altamente eficiente a la fotosíntesis natural han inspirado tecnologías artificiales y semiartificiales in vitro. Una de ellas, descubierta hace cincuenta y cinco años, ha inspirado materiales y tecnologías centrados en la producción de oxígeno molecular e hidrógeno. Se trata de la fotolisis del agua, es decir, de la oxidación del agua por la luz solar.
