Campaña SUMMER - 2020 : ¿Qué organismos habitan la zona de penumbra de los océanos?

Abstract

¿Qué organismos habitan la zona de penumbra de los océanos? Queremos conocer su diversidad, estimar su biomasa y entender sus pautas migratorias. La zona de 200 a 1000 metros de profundidad, llamada zona mesopelágica, constituye aproximadamente el 20% del volumen oceánico mundial y es uno de los ecosistema menos comprendidos de la Tierra. Investigaciones recientes sugieren que la biomasa de peces en el ecosistema mesopelágico podría ser 10 veces mayor de lo que se pensaba anteriormente. Sin embargo, aún hay un alto grado de incertidumbre. La campaña SUMMER recorre las aguas oceánicas alrededor de la península ibérica para evaluar la biomasa y diversidad de especies mesopelágicas, y su papel en las cadenas tróficas oceánicas y como transportadores de carbono al océano profundo
