Los Estomatópodos son crustáceos marinos bentónicos de hábitos depredadores, restringidos principalmente a las aguas someras tropicales. Se conocen en la actualidad alrededor de 400 especies pertenecientes a un único suborden, los UNIPELTATA, constituido por cinco superfamilias: Lysiosquilloidea, Erythrosquilloidea, Gonodactyloidea, Bathysquilloidea y Squilloidea. Este orden se encuentra actualmente en pleno estudio y son descritas continuamente nuevas especies, por lo que cabe esperar todavía importantes revisiones de índole taxonómica. Por ejemplo, AHYONG (1997) considera que la familia PARASQUILLIDAE, juntamente con una familia extinta, podría pertenecer a una nueva superfamilia. Un total de 19 familias de estomatópodos se reconocen en la actualidad (MANNING 1980, AHYONG 1997)
