Abstract

Un reciente estudio de la Fundación BBVA arroja un dato escalofriante: sólo un 7% de los españoles nombra a Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934) cuando se le pregunta por un científico. Es el sexto más nombrado y el segundo español, por detrás de Severo Ochoa (1905-1993). Aunque si repitiésemos esa encuesta en la SEBBM las cifras seguramente mejorasen, no deja de ser chocante que tan pocos compatriotas se acuerden de uno de los cinco o diez científicos más revolucionarios de la Historia de la Ciencia… mundial. Porque el navarro-aragonés Cajal es uno de ellos, de ese selecto club (Newton, Darwin, Cajal, Einstein…) y, como ellos, adelantó cincuenta o cien años en el conocimiento de su época, creando una nueva disciplina: Cajal es universalmente reconocido como el fundador de la moderna Neurociencia.
