Informe de campaña: Platuxa 2014

Authors: Guijarro-García, Elena;

Informe de campaña: Platuxa 2014

Abstract

The survey plan for 3NO groundfish survey had to be restricted because the scientific crew was short of two people. This affected mostly the stomach content and invertebrate sampling. Similarly, no gonads were collected (this sampling will be biennal from now on) and the number of otoliths was reduced. Nevertheless, the data collected are enough for evaluation of the target species: cod, Greenland halibut, redfish, American plaice, yellowtail flounder, skate ray, black dogfish, roughhead grenadier, white hake and witch flounder. Hydrographic data were collected as usual. Only cod biomass has increased among the target species, lathough this increase must be considered within the historical trend of the species rather than over the last decade. This year even some juvenile cod were caught for first time in several years. The rest of the species have been caught in numbers similar to those of 2013, althugh capelin catch also increased somewhat. Mean length was the same as in 2013 for American plaice, yellowtail flounder and black dogfish. It decreased slightly in the case of Greenland halibut, and significantly for thorny skate. Mean length of redfish, roughhead grenadier and witch flounder increased slightly. The largest mean length increases corresponded to white hake and cod, with the largest mean length since 2002. Stomach sampling was carried out on American plaice, cod, yellowtail flounder, Greenland halibut, narrownose chimera and large-eyed rabbitfish. Results were very similar to those obtained in 2012. Presence or biomass of the most common invertebrates have been mapped, as well as biomass of target species in relation to bottom temperature, which was very similar to that observed in 2013.
