La microbiología de los naturalistas del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales

Abstract

La microbiología se consolidó como disciplina científica durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX de la mano del genial Luis Pasteur. Pronto comenzaron a extenderse sus conocimientos a lo largo y ancho de la geografía española a través de distintas vías. Hasta ahora se sabía que su introducción se había iniciado en el ámbito médico como consecuencia directa del enorme interés que supuso el descubrimiento de que los agentes causales de las denominadas enfermedades infecciosas eran precisamente algunos microbios. También se había descrito otra vía de entrada casi simultánea: la del ámbito agroalimentario por ser los alimentos ocasionalmente vehículo de algunas enfermedades infecciosas pero sobre todo por ser los microbios los principales responsables de las fermentaciones panaria enológica etc. El grupo de Historia y Documentación de las Ciencias Naturales en España de este Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN) ha descubierto una tercera vía de entrada de los conocimientos microbiológicos hasta ahora absolutamente ignorada habiéndola bautizado como la vía naturalista. Importantes naturalistas que han tenido una relación directa con el Museo han sido José Madrid Celso Arévalo Antonio de Zulueta o Emilio Fernández Galiano que fuera director del Instituto José Acosta del MNCN. Un hijo de éste último Dimas Fernández Galiano formado como naturalista acabó siendo el primer catedrático de microbiología de la F. de C. Biológicas de la UCM.
