Base Antártica Juan Carlos I

Abstract

La Base Antártica Española (BAE) Juan Carlos I, gestionada por el CSIC, fue inaugurada en enero de 1988. Tiene como objetivo apoyar las actividades españolas en la Antártida y en particular la realización de los proyectos de investigación científica que coordina el Subprograma de Investigación en la Antártida del Programa Nacional de Recursos Naturales. La base está ocupada únicamente durante el verano austral, desde mediados de noviembre hasta principios de marzo, aunque se mantienen registros automatizados durante todo el año. Se encuentra situada en la costa SE de Bahía Sur, en la Península Hurd de Isla Livingston (archipiélago de las Shetland del Sur), a unas 20 millas de navegación de la base española Gabriel de Castilla, situada en Isla Decepción
