Un estudio internacional liderado por la Universidad de Barcelona ha identificado la primera especie potencialmente invasora que llega a la Antártida por medio de algas marinas a la deriva, según informa la UB. El estudio, publicado en la revista "Scientific Reports", supone la primera evidencia científica de una especie potencialmente invasora y colonial, el briozo marino Membranipora membranacea, que llega a las islas de latitudes antárticas en macroalgas que flotan a la deriva en el mar. La investigación está liderada por la profesora de la Facultad de Biología y del Instituto de Investigación de la Biodiversidad (IRBio), Conxita Àvila, y participan expertos del Instituto de Ciencias del Mar (ICM-CISC), el Servicio Antártico Británico (BAS) y la Universidad de Hull, del Reino Unido.
