Un estudi recent del Centres Superior d’Investigacions Científiques (CSIC) ha detectat compostos químics plastificants en sardines, seitons i lluços del mar Mediterrani. Els nivells trobats però no suposen un risc per a la salut humana. El treball l’ha liderat l’Institut de Diagnòstic Ambiental i Estudis de l’Aigua (IDAEA-CSIC), en col·laboració amb l’Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) i l’Institut Epsanyol d’Oceanografia (IEO-CSIC). Els plastificats estudiats són els èsters organofosforats, una família de compostos químics àmpliament utilitzats per la indústria. Alguns d’aquests tenen efectes tòxics sobre el sistema nerviós i endocrí i poden afectar el sistema reproductor o tenir efectes cancerígens
