Esta obra es un estudio regional de la industria azucarera y el trabajo africano en ella en una región de Cuba, la más importante en la expansión de dicha industria durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, aunque su poblamiento en la segunda década de esa centuria se realizó con objetivos muy distintos. El autor, Orlando García Martínez, es especialista en el tema de la esclavitud
