En las islas Canarias la presencia del gato se remonta a tiempos prehistóricos, aunque su mayor abundancia debió ocurrir después de la conquista por parte de la Corona de Castilla. En nuestro archipiélago su dieta se conoce con relativa precisión y son los mamíferos introducidos los que constituyen la base alimenticia y en especial el Conejo (Oryctolagus cuniculus).
