Post-'Brexit' y mercantilización de la salud

Abstract

La disforia subsiguiente a la formalización del Brexit comienza a mostrar sus efectos menos emotivos y más prosaicos. Esto se corresponde con un creciente interés por optimizar negocios a ambos lados del Atlántico Norte. Business is business. Y, de esta forma, auspiciados por los deseos de Boris Johnson en pos de una asociación comercial con los Estados Unidos de Donald Trump que sustituya a su anterior alianza con los socios de la UE, se trata ahora de maximizar los potenciales beneficios de una progresiva mercantilización de la salud y la atención sanitaria. La Administración de Washington y las élites económicas apoyadas en el sector sanitario-farmacéutico pretenden un acceso sin restricciones a los registros de 55 millones de británicos del universal y público Servicio Nacional de Salud (NHS, en sus siglas en inglés), cuya utilización podría valorarse en 10 millardos de libras esterlinas.Según la información aparecida en The Guardian, durante el año pasado se mantuvieron reuniones más o menos discretas en las que se trató de negociar la adquisición, por parte de la industria farmacéutica estadounidense, de la mayor cantidad de información médica disponible y digitalizada de los usuarios del NHS británico.
