The book sets out to offer a study of terrorism in the developed world. The author focuses the analyses to the decision made by radical activists in the late 1960s and 1970s to take up arms against the “system.” The operational strategy of these activists was based on the belief that by going underground and killing security forces, state officials and business people, the masses would mobilize and defeat capitalism. Such sort of terrorism is qualified by S anchez-Cuenca as Leftist armed struggle carried out with the aim of triggering revolution. The anarchist persuasion is also added to this broad denomination, leaving apart other political orientations of the Right with similar ultimate goals. The observations underpinning the book concentrate on affluent countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Japan, Greece and Portugal and lasted, at times, until the end of the twentieth century.
