Reptes per a la producció d'aliments en un món cada cop més poblat

Abstract

Segons l’ONU, la població humana augmentarà fins ~9.800 milions el 2050. La FAO calcula que això comportarà un increment de ~60% en la demanda d’aliments, amb un clar augment del consum de peix. En aquest context, cal plantejar-se d’on han de sortir els aliments necessaris per fer front a aquesta demanda. Si deixem a banda l’agricultura i la ramaderia, que afronten reptes d’utilització del sòl i competència pels recursos hídrics, les mirades es giren cap al mar. Les captures mundials totals de pesca, però, estan estancades al voltant dels 90 milions de tones, amb molts dels estocs sobreexplotats. D’altra banda, la producció de l’aqüicultura (excloent les plantes aquàtiques) arribà gairebé als 74 milions de tones el 2014, si bé bona part de la producció correspon a espècies d’aigua dolça, una producció que a mitjà-llarg termini afronta els mateixos problemes que l’agricultura i la ramaderia. En aquesta conferència s’exposen algunes de les solucions que actualment es prenen en consideració i que inclouen el foment d’unes pesqueres sostenibles, la disminució del rebuig, la pesca de noves espècies i un major aprofitament d’espècies no destinades actualment al consum humà directe. Tot i que s’ha argumentat que la verdadera revolució tindrà lloc quan l’aqüicultura sigui majoritàriament marina i pugui tancar el seu cicle de producció depenent només del mar, aquest objectiu, ara per ara, sembla llunyà. Algunes possibilitats inclouen el cultiu de macro- i microalgues, mol·luscs i altres animals filtradors, a banda d’una reducció del nivell tròfic dels peixos de cultiu i un millor rendiment en creixement i reproducció, com ja s’està produint gràcies a avenços en la comprensió de la seva fisiologia. Aquests reptes no estan exclosos de riscos, no només de caire tècnic, sinó també ambientals, fonamentalment deguts al canvi climàtic i a la pol·lució, així com de viabilitat econòmica i d’acceptació social
