Abstract

Cuando se inicia el estudio del mar, quizás el aspecto que llama más poderosamente la atención es su inmensidad; del total de la superficie de la Tierra, nada menos que tres cuartas partes de la misma están ocupadas por el agua. Este hecho, ya de por sí muy importante, aumenta su interés si se tiene en cuenta que existe adicionalmente una gran diferencia en como se distribuye esta relación, mar-tierra emergida, en el hemisferio norte y en el hemisferio sur, mientras en el primero la relación está más equilibrada, en el hemisferio sur la masa marina es absolutamente dominante respecto de la tierra emergida. Si se tienen en cuenta las diferentes propiedades físicas del agua y de la tierra emergida se comprenderá enseguida que existen variaciones entre ambos hemisferios. A modo de ejemplo cabría señalar que el elevado coeficiente calórico del agua ha de afectar de modo muy diferente la dinámica general de la Tierra en ambos hemisferios: la reserva de calor que puede acumular la enorme masa marina austral es considerablemente mayor que la de la parte situada al norte del ecuador.
