La instal·lació dels esculls artificials a la costa mediterrània té com a principal finalitat la protecció de les comunitats naturals en front de les activitats de pesca, especialment de la pesca d'arrossegament. Aquesta no solament realitza una extracció dels organismes d'interès comercial, sinó que malmet els fons, pertorba i mata gran quantitat d'altres organismes no comercials i elimina pràcticament els components del bentos que hi viuen fixats.
