El projecte de recerca "Variabilitat de meso-escala a la capa superficial oceànica" (1989-1992) de l'Institut de Ciències del mar del CSIC i el Departament de Física de la Universista de les Illes Balears, finançat pel Programa Nacional de Recursos Marins i Aquicultura (MAR89-0550), té com un dels seus objectius l'estudi de l'ajust de les masses d'aigua atlàntica i mediterrània en el mar d'Alboran.
