Abstract

L’any 1988 vaig emprendre l’estudi del flux de nutrients a l’Atlàntic Nord juntament amb el professor Gabriel Csanady (premi Huntsman d’Oceanografia 1991). Part del nostre interès estava a determinar quin és el transport de nutrients associat a una intensa corrent oceànica que flueix cap al nord al llarg del talús de la costa est d’Amèrica del Nord, l’anomenada Corrent del Golf. Els nostres càlculs van mostrar l’existència d’un extraordinari flux de nutrients a uns centenars de metres de profunditat i, poc després, vàrem presentar aquests resultats al Brookhaven National Laboratory dels Estats Units sota un encapçalament que deia “La Corrent de Nutrients, artèria de Gaia, el planeta viu”.
