Abstract

Los “neandertales” suelen evocar la imagen de unos seres muy próximos a nosotros pero, a la vez, distintos, lejanos y enigmáticos. Ante la inquietante pregunta ¿de dónde venimos?, las sociedades humanas han construido su particular relato para dar respuesta a esta incógnita y, en este ámbito, los neandertales juegan un papel principal. La Península Ibérica ha pasado a ser un territorio clave a la hora de entender el proceso de evolución de este grupo humano fósil. Los yacimientos ibéricos aportan claves fundamentales tanto sobre el origen de la especie Homo neanderthalensis como de su desaparición final. En este contexto, la muestra de neandertales de El Sidrón (Asturias) estudiada por el Grupo de Paleantropología MNCN-CSIC, representa, hoy en día, la colección de restos de esta especie humana fósil más numerosa y completa encontrada en España. Su valor científico reside en los múltiples aspectos que se pueden abordar, incluidos sus caracteres anatómicos, paleobiológicos y paleogenéticos.
