The Malaspina circumnavigation 2010 is an interdisciplinary research project whose main objectives are to evaluate the impact of global change on the ocean and to explore its biodiversity. It begins in December 2010 with the departure from Cádiz of the oceanographic research vessel Hespérides operated by the Spanish Navy. After a voyage passing through Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, Perth, Sydney, Auckland, Honolulu, Cartagena de Indias and Panama, it returns to Spain in July 2011. At the same time, the ship Sarmiento de Gamboa, operated by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), will be working in parallel between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santo Domingo and Vigo. In this way, for seven months, over 250 scientists aboard the two ships will carry out an expedition combining cutting-edge scientific research with the training of young researchers, and the promotion of marine science and scientific culture in society. Through the implementation of this project is to create leadership and cooperation platforms in the Spanish oceanographic community, training a new generation of young researchers with a global perspective on the functioning of marine ecosystems; celebrate the International Year of Biodiversity (2010) and the 200 anniversary of the death of Alessandro Malaspina (1754 - 1810), who led the first Spanish scientific expedition to circumnavigate, and increase awareness of society about the role that Spain played in the exploration of the planet's resources, and (informing the public of the preceding aspects, increasing their knowledge on the impacts of global change on the ocean and on opportunities for important discoveries in the exploration of deep-sea biodiversity.
This project forms part of the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 Programme, and is headed by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), with outstanding collaboration from the Spanish Navy and the BBVA Foundation.
