Investigadores del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN-CSIC) han comprobado que, contrariamente a lo que predice la teoría, no hay compensación entre el número de espermatozoides que generan los machos y su tamaño. Los investigadores han descubierto que la cantidad de energía que cada especie dedica a la producción espermática varía. Asimismo hay momentos del proceso de fecundación en los que podría ser más importante el número y en otros el tamaño de los espermatozoides.
