Abstract

Las Médulas es un paraje situado al NO de León, en El Bierzo, cerca de Ponferrada, famoso por ser resultado de una gran explotación minera de oro a cielo abierto, que fecha de época romana. Está declarada como Bien de Interés Cultural, en 1996, Patrimonio de la Humanidad, por la UNESCO, en 1997, y Monumento Natural en 2002. El yacimiento de oro está contenido entre depósitos de color rojo, originados a partir de abanicos aluviajes del Mioceno, sobre un basamento paleozoico de calizas, cuarcitas y pizarras. El origen del oro parece estar asociado a filones de oro, erosionados y transportados por torrentes hasta depositarse en abanicos aluviales durante el Mioceno. Se distinguen tres formaciones distintas, de muro a techo: Fm. Orellán, Santalla y Las Médulas, con distinta ley, siendo la fm. Santalla, en su base, la que tiene mayor contenido en oro. El método de extracción subterránea se basaba en el sistema ruina montium, favorecido por los riachuelos que cruzaban el yacimiento y las tierras de aluviones que lo formaban. En este sistema, el agua se canalizaba en la parte superior de la explotación, después se excavaban una serie de galerías ciegas para que el agua descendiese por ellas, con tal fuerza, que se llevaba todo por delante y “rompía” las montañas. La tierra se amontonaba formando taludes y el agua, con el oro, llenaba depósitos.
