La Santa Sede y la II República (1934-1939). Paz o victoria

Abstract

[EN] The relations between the Vatican and the Second Spanish Republic can be summarized in three phases. The first, begins in April 1931. It is passed from the settlement to the conflict. The second begins in December 1931. There is a change in strategy. The crusading spirit is abandoned and starts the mission. The third electoral change occurred in December 1933, defeated the left. From 1934 to 1939, the Holy See negotiates on the rights and interests of Catholics until July 1936. Initiated civil war, wanted to mediate between the warring parties to negotiate between them. To mitigate the misfortunes and the miseries of war, developed a humanitarian action. Before the dilemma, peace or victory, the Vatican chooses to work for peace. First the governments of President Azaña and then the military and governments of Franco, refused to negotiate the peace. By choosing the victory, each announced it would implacable with the vanquished. This happened during the war and when finished it.
