Abstract

Murero se encuentra situado en la provincia de Zaragoza, y cuenta con el mayor yacimiento de trilobites del Cámbrico de la Península Ibérica. Como un caso peculiar, el registro paleontológico es bastante continuo durante un periodo de tiempo muy prolongado. Incluye un espesor de 200 metros de estratos donde se alternan rocas de ambientes carbonatados y terrígenos que vienen a representar un depósito de sedimentos y fósiles casi continuo durante 10 millones de años sobre el fondo de una plataforma marina. Destacan, entre sus fósiles, los trilobites por su abundancia y diversidad. Fueron artrópodos primitivos de la Era Paleozoica. En Murero se han descrito unas 70 especies y 30 géneros distintos, con una excepcional conservación. Por ello se le conoce como la "Capilla Sixtina de los trilobites". Se calcula que el yacimiento contendrá más de 150 especies distintas cuando se estudie el resto de grupos fósiles. El evento Valdemiedes viene precedido por la extinción de los arqueociatos (animales arrecifales cámbricos) también llamada extinción del Botomiense superior en alusión a la última edad del Cámbrico Inferior en la escala geocronológica rusa. El evento Valdemiedes produce en Murero la desaparición de la mayoría de las especies de las principales familias de trilobites del Cámbrico Inferior. También una miniaturización ("efecto Liliput") de los grupos de invertebrados con esqueleto. Aquéllos que no se extinguen recuperarán su tamaño normal en la parte final del evento.
