Abstract

[EN]The Selvagem Pequena is one of the two main islands in the Macaronesian archipelago of the Savage Islands (Ilhas Selvagens). The absence of introduced species, an exception amongst the rest of Macaronesian islands, has preserved a unique system where we can find the narrow endemic Asparagus nesiotes subsp. nesiotes. Its demographic structure has been studied and we have used AFLP markers in order to shed light on the genetic relationships between individuals and to infer possible conservation strategies. This study revealed that the individuals sampled form a single population of different age classes structured in four lineages or genetic clusters with a high degree of gene flow and proven reproductive capacity. It has also been found that the number of individuals is higher than previously expected (97 reproductively individuals). Its current IUCN classification is hereby discussded according to the results of this study.
