Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are the most common adverse health events in Latin America (LAC), significantly compromising patient safety due to increased periods of hospital admissions, morbidity and death rates. Since 2020, with the COVID-19 pandemic, LAC has struggled on a social and financial level due to the continuous pressure felt by healthcare organizations to deliver efficient and safe care. No professional group has been more affected than nurses, who provide 24/7 care to vulnerable citizens in the community and hospitals. The European Council recognizes structured education and training in this field as an essential measure for nurses' professional development. Although local professional training is required, educational reforms are required in LAC to integrate a comprehensive approach to HAI and AMR in the nursing curriculum, preparing students to become proactive agents of change. The main goal of the HAInnovPrev project is to improve the quality of nursing curricula in LAC and contribute to the delivery of safe and high-quality care. To achieve this, the HAInnovPrev consortium will develop the nursing curricula of the partner institutions in the areas of HAI prevention and control and AMR. With this aim, an innovative pedagogical model will be developed, having as main activities its design, piloting, evaluation, and implementing, involving at least 600 nursing students, 60 teachers, 100 clinical nurses, and all relevant stakeholders. In this way, it is excepted to improve the curricula and the quality of education in the partner HEIs, increase the level of students' competencies, adjust them to the needs of the labor market and society, and ultimately the prevention of HAI and improvement of safety and quality of healthcare. As main outputs and aiming at the sustainability of the project, the HAInnovPrev Model, Simulation Scenarios, and an e-Book will be developed, adapted to the LAC cultural context.
