The SHINE project is implemented by a consortium of nine partner organizations, including eight universities – two in Kenya, two in Uganda, two in South Sudan, and two in Europe – as well as The African Network for Internationalization of Education (Kenya).The overall objective of our project is to enhance the governance, leadership, management, administrative and academic capacities of the partner universities in East Africa to integrate an international dimension into their education, research and service missions, thus enhancing quality and relevance of higher education.The project aims to support East African higher education institutions (EA HEIs) in developing holistic, context-sensitive, equitable, and inclusive internationalization strategies and structures. It also focuses on building staff capacities and creating intra-institutional networks of internationalization coordinators who can drive internationalization objectives at various levels within their institutions.Expected Outcomes:- Each EA HEI will develop, validate, and implement a new internationalization strategy and establish an internationalization unit.- At least 88 staff members will be trained to coordinate and facilitate internationalization efforts in EA HEIs.- A minimum of 550 academic and administrative staff members in EA HEIs will be trained to contribute to internationalization at different institutional levels.- At least 180 students will participate in East Africa–EU virtual exchanges on global citizenship, fostering a culture of internationalization within EA HEIs.To support these efforts, the project will develop a customized, modular training program tailored to the skills gaps and learning needs of EA HEIs. Our ambition is to ensure that all academic and administrative staff in EA HEIs are prepared for internationalization through the annual implementation of the SHINE staff development program.
