In Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region, there is a clear disconnection between students, academia, and organizations, with dramatic consequences for the employment of higher education institution (HEI) students. Moreover, there is a perceived absence of an effective educational approach, aiming at practical contact with the labour market to promote entrepreneurial experiences added to the theoretical foundation. To match these needs, the main goal of this project is to tighten a connection between higher education (HE) studies and working life partners to promote employability, innovation, and entrepreneurship in the LAC region. Firstly, the project’s goal is to develop a learning model of integrating HE studies into working life. In this learner-centred model HEI students solve real problems of the real companies and organisations during their studies. Secondly, the project aims to re-design the role of a HEI teacher, that is, developing concrete guidelines and tools to transform a teacher’s role “from a lecturer to a coach”. Thirdly, the project aims to modernise the educational system in the Latin American HEIs by developing the curricula to adequately respond to working life requirements. The project’s impacts are improved employment opportunities of young people, increased professional development of teachers, established permanent connections between HEIs and organisations. Curricula development in the LAC HEIs with an adaption of a learner-centred model will be a permanent impact of this HEIComp project. The project helps developing closer links between education and labour markets and thus, contributes to the sustainable economic development of the LAC region. The consortium is composed of 9 institutions from 3 EU countries (Finland, Portugal, and Romania) and 2 LAC countries (Brazil and Paraguay), including 5 HEIs. HEIComp will be coordinated by Laurea University of Applied Sciences, Finland.
