    Despite technological breakthroughs in connected and automated transport, the total transformation of existing transportation into a fully autonomous system is still decades away. In the meantime, mixed traffic environments with semi-autonomous vehicles proactively passing the dynamic driving task back to the human driver, whenever system limits are approached, is expected to become the norm. Such a Request to Intervene (RtI) can only be successful and met with trust by end-users if the driver state is continuously monitored and his/her availability properly evaluated and sufficiently triggered (through tailored human-machine interfaces - HMIs). In parallel, driver training has to evolve to account for the safe and sensible usage of semi-automated driving, whereas driver intervention performance has to be made an integral part of both driver and technology assessment. Besides, the ethical implications of automated decision-making need to be properly assessed, giving rise to novel risk and liability analysis models. The vision of Trustonomy (a neologism from the combination of trust + autonomy) is to maximise the safety, trust and acceptance of automated vehicles by helping to address the aforementioned technical and non-technical challenges through a well-integrated and inter-disciplinary approach, bringing domain experts and ordinary citizens to work closely together. Trustonomy will investigate, setup, test and comparatively assess, in terms of performance, ethics, acceptability and trust, different relevant technologies and approaches, including driver state monitoring systems, HMI designs, risk models, and driver training methods. This will be done through both simulator and field based studies, in a variety of autonomous driving and RtI scenarios, covering different types of users (in terms of age, gender, driving experience, etc.), road transport modes (private cars, trucks, buses), levels of automation (L3 - L5) and driving conditions.

    The Transportation sector employs over 10 million persons in the EU today. At the same time, Transport is a social sector that is rapidly developing, changing and being influenced to the maximum extent by the development of automation, electrification and greening of transport, among others, thus facing problems in staffing its several domains with appropriate and qualified personnel. This fact, makes the need for changes in training and education content, curricula, tools and methodologies absolutely imperative, incorporating lifelong learning aspects for the professionals in all transports areas. SKILLFUL vision is to identify the skills and competences needed by the Transport workforce of the future and define the training methods and tools to meet them. For all the above trends, employability will be strongly connected by SKILLFUL to future transport job requirements for all transportation modes and multimodal chains (which constitute a key transport of the future trend) and for all levels/types of workers, while all training modes will be included and integrated in a balanced way. To achieve this, SKILLFUL aims to review the existing, emerging and future knowledge and skills requirements of workers at all levels in the transportation sector, to structure the key specifications and components of the curricula and training courses that will be needed to meet these competence requirements optimally and to identify and propose new business roles in the education and training chain, such as those of “knowledge aggregator”, “training certifier” and training promoter”, in order to achieve European wide competence development. Project results are verified through s wide number of Pilots with low to high skilled workers from all transportation modes Europewide.

    CONTEXTThe e-ManTRA project focuses on the Transport & Logistics (T&L) sector, which represents approx. 4% of the EU's gross national product and employs around 9 M people (~4.5% of EU employees). Its impact is substantial, as other sectors need an efficient T&L sector to develop. T&L is more than a question of mobility: it is a factor of competitiveness for the EU and will therefore play a significant role in the economic recovery overcoming the current crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.T&L trainings were strongly impacted by the sudden transition to 100% distance learning. In France, a Carif-Oref survey on training during lockdown shows that 75% of T&L training has been suspended, one of the highest rates. EQF level 5 training courses for transport managers have been particularly affected due to the significant lack of online resources. We concentrate on these trainings as it is crucial for the sector to ensure pedagogical continuity here: The transport manager has a central role in T&L companies through the organisation of transport, drivers and customer relations.OBJECTIVESWe aim to equip EQF level 5 trainings for transport managers all over Europe with effective and inclusive tools, training material and teaching methods to ensure distance teaching and online learning, continuous learner monitoring as well as the evaluation of learning outcomes.The project intends to:Guide learners & teachers for an optimised digital learning experienceImprove digital education readiness through the provision of free (OER) & inclusive online tools & innovative resources for training providers, by allowing for flexible combinations of a distance & blended learning offer, & by providing teachers with useful decision-making tools to design & implement innovative training approaches specifically tailored to digital learning needsOvercome the hurdles of the Covid-19 pandemic by facilitating distance learning formatsPARTNERSAFT has gathered seven complementary partners with various backgrounds and expertise representing different groups of stakeholders and beneficiaries: 1 sectoral association in charge of developing training in T&L, 2 national training providers with own pedagogical engineering departments, 1 network of training providers, 2 public high schools and 1 SME developing e-learning tools. The consortium is represented in six countries, thus covering several European sub regions.ACTIVITIES, METHODOLOGY & EXPECTED RESULTSOur project is structured in 5 main activities. A1 Project management, A4 Dissemination and A5 Quality monitoring are cross-functional and supporting the implementation of the overall project.
