Abstract

Memorial de Josefo Cresuelo, de la Compañía de Jesús en que refiere que después de que Felipe II haya dado libertad a los corsarios ingleses que se toman en la mar, el Padre Personio y él han procurado detener a los muchachos que no llegan a 15 años para adoctrinarlos en la fe católica y disponer después de ellos como caballeros y mercaderes. Señala el caso de uno de estos mancebos, Juan Fidian Gilson, que ha sido detenido en Bilbao tras intentar escapar, indicando el peligro de que estos adoctrinados puedan llegar a servir como espías a favor del inglés, por lo que suplica que este Gilson sea remitido al corregidor de Bilbao y éste se encargue de enviarle a las galeras de España. Por otro lado, el Padre Enrique Garneto, superior de los Padres de la Compañía que viven en Inglaterra le ha escrito que hace unos años prendió en la mar a Thomas Forman, mancebo inglés, al respecto del cual suplica quede en libertad para poderlo acoger en un seminario y adoctrinarle. Respuesta favorable a que el corregidor de Bilbao prenda a Gilson y le entregue a galeras. Respecto a Forman, que se informe de dónde está (en Fuenterrabía) y se procurará lo que convenga.
