Long-term mammal survey in pasture fields of the Montaña Palentina Natural Park, Cordillera Cantábrica (Spain), 2016-2025

Abstract

The censuses were carried out on a fixed route of 53 km out and back along the roads that run along the bottom of the valleys in a selected area of the Montaña Palentina Natural Park. The census took place mainly at morning and evening and lasted between 3-4 hours each. One section of the fixed route of 11.7 km, located in the Castillería valley, was also done at night. Each animal observed was georeferenced using an orthophoto on a tablet. In addition, whenever possible, photos or videos were taken of wildcats and domestic cats (Felis catus). Other mammals recorded were: Red fox (Vulpes Vulpes), European badger (Meles meles), European pine marten (Martes martes), Stone marten (Martes foina), wolf (Canis lupus), Red deer (Cervus elaphus), Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), Cantabrian chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), wild boar (Sus scrofa), Broom hare (Lepus castroviejoi), European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) and Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra).

[EN] This dataset provides the raw data from the mammal censuses carried out from car in one area of the Montaña Palentina Natural Park, between 2016-2025. The main objective of the census was to collect data on the use that wildcats (Felis silvestris) made of pasture fields for cattle grazzing. However, we recorded all mammal observed except dogs and livestock. This dataset will be updated annually.
