Global Emissions of Methane, Carbon Monoxide, and Methyl Chloroform for the Year 2020

Abstract

Global emissions of methane, carbon monoxide, and methyl chloroform for the year 2020. Emission estimates are derived using a four-dimensional variational (4D‑Var) data assimilation in the GEOS-Chem Adjoint Model that integrates space‑based observations of methane, formaldehyde (HCHO), and carbon monoxide from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI), along with in situ NOAA measurements of methyl chloroform. For a full description see:Yu, X., Millet, D. B., Henze, D. K., Worden, H., Vigouroux, C., Patra, P., Hill, J. D., & Jackson, R. B. (2026). Multi-species constraints resolve methane source versus sink changes: lessons from 2020. Earth's Future, in press.
