Abstract

La gaviota Guanaguanare (Leucophaeus atricilla) habita zonas costeras e islas desde Norteamérica hasta Suramérica, donde suele migrar en invierno. Con el objetivo de describir su distribución estacional y espacial en la zona costera de Santa Rita, Zulia, Venezuela, se realizaron conteos mensuales entre abril de 2022 y septiembre de 2023, anotando la utilidad que obtienen de cada zona ecológica y clasificándolos por edad según el plumaje. Se cuantificaron 917 individuos, con una mayor proporción de adultos no reproductivos (57.5%), seguido de adultos reproductivos (41.1%) y por último juveniles del segundo invierno (1.4%). Permaneciendo en el área entre noviembre y abril, alcanzando su máxima abundancia en febrero (409 ind.) y marchándose entre mayo y octubre, salvo algunas apariciones ocasionales, coincidiendo con la temporada reproductiva de la especie y el período de permanencia de las aves que invernan en la costa caribeña. Estuvo distribuida en la zona intermareal, la zona urbanizada y la zona sublitoral, siendo esta última la más visitada, utilizando espacios naturales y artificiales para distintas actividades y compartiéndolos con otras aves acuáticas. Estos resultados demuestran la importancia de la zona costera de Santa Rita para Leucophaeus atricilla, la cual les ofrece condiciones para obtener alimento, refugio, reposo y acicalamiento.
