Lyrik des Verlusts. Erinnerung an den Kindertransport in den Gedichten von Karen Gershon, Lotte Kramer und Gerda Mayer

Abstract

(english) The Kindertransport has been extensively researched since the first reunification in 1989, but poetry on the subject has been studied only marginally. This paper, entitled "Lyrik des Verlusts – Erinnerung an den Kindertransport in den Gedichten von Karen Gershon, Lotte Kramer und Gerda Mayer" (Poetry of Loss: Memories of the Kindertransport in the poems of Karen Gershon, Lotte Kramer and Gerda Mayer), aims to present a comprehensive study of the three British-Jewish poets who wrote about the Kindertransport and its aftermath in the German-speaking world. The importance of writing poetry and the role of Judaism in the lives of the three women will also be explored. The work compares poems on themes that are central to the work of all three women. The starting point is a historical and biographical oriented literary study. The analysis is primarily a close reading of the text, incorporating cultural studies, and especially Jewish aspects as well as theories of psychoanalytical literary studies. From the interpretation of the poems, it is clear that grief and identity were the two themes that all three women dealt with most intensively in their poems. The influence of their Jewish heritage is also evident in their poetry, sometimes consciously, but sometimes also unconsciously. Furthermore, the poems are a means of repeating and processing what they have experienced. By choosing the medium of the poetry, the three poets created the possibility of addressing issues indirectly and the structure gave them a framework within which to place their experiences. Poetry is therefore an ideal medium for processing trauma. Because of its complexity and unconsciously controlled tone, poets can express the unspeakable without saying it directly. The reader is presented with a more complex and emotional view of the experience, which can lead to an enrichment and better understanding of historical events.
