Euodynerus (Euodynerus) histrionicus Selis & Carpenter 2023, comb. nov.

Abstract

Euodynerus (Euodynerus) histrionicus (Gerstäcker, 1857) comb. nov. (Fig. 36) Rhynchium histrionicum Gerstäcker 1857: 463, ♀ —“Mossambique” (holotype ZMHB). Rhynchium foraminosum Gribodo 1895: 101, ♀ —“Lourenso-Marquez” (holotype lost, previously in MSNG) Typical material examined. Holotype of Rhynchium histrionicum: “ histrionicum / Gerst. / (caput falsum!) // Type // Mozambique / Tette / Peters S. // 2662” (ZMHB). Distribution. Angola, Botswana, Malawi *, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa *, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zimbabwe (Bequaert 1918; Carpenter et al. 2009; Gerstäcker 1857, 1862; Gribodo 1895; Radoszkovsky 1881; von Schulthess 1899, 1922 a, 1922b). Remarks. This species was placed in the genus Anterhynchium by Carpenter et al. (2009), but the examination of the holotype in ZMHB and a series of specimens housed in MSNVE allows us to transfer it to Euodynerus. The characters that justify this new placement are: translucent margin at apex of T1, propodeum not elongate, tegula not exceeding parategula and propodeum without dorsal carinae. It needs to be noted that the head of the holotype is false, as written on a label pinned below the specimen, and belongs to a male Anterhynchium of the grayi group, but the rest of the body clearly indicates that this species is a Euodynerus.
