Abstract

Application of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for spatial-temporal analysis of the Terra Nova River Basin (Pernambuco) A B S T R A C T Studying the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in watersheds is extremely important, since it helps in the management and consequently in better decision making. The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in land use and occupation in an area of the semi-arid pernambuco. The study was seized on three Landsat 5 and 8 images between 1998, 2008 and 2018 in the Terra Nova River Watershed. In 1998, it was possible to observe NDVI values between (0.1 - 0.4), evidencing vegetation with "thin" cover. In 2008, NDVI was found with predominant values between (0.1 - 0.3), presenting "thin" cover vegetation and larger areas of exposed soil. In 2018, the predominant NDVI values were between (0.2 – 0.4), classifying as "thin" cover vegetation, similar to 1998. The NDVI values presented show a change in the dynamics of the vegetation cover of the basin, it was also possible to observe the insertion of water bodies through the Nilo Coelho and Serra do Livramento reservoirs from the São Francisco River Integration Project (PISF). However, it is concluded that despite the predominance of caatinga areas in the basin, there has been an intensification of anthropic action over the years, with the growth of agricultural areas, due to the greater water availability in the region. Keywords: Remote sensing, NDVI, Semiarid, Caatinga.
