Abstract

Teeth constitute a magnificent raw material for anthropological, genetic, dental and forensic investigations, by virtue of their easy accessibility, examination, registration and resistance to the most excessive intra vitam and/or postmortem circumstances. The information inherent to its size and particularities has been extremely useful to determine the sex and identify human remains. This study attempts to verify whether two dental and interdental measurements are valid instruments for sex determination, in a study in Uruguay. This is an odontometric analysis of 1,005 plaster models (481 upper and 524 lower), of 507 male and 498 female patients, aged between 18 and 60 years, assisted in an orthodontic clinic in the city of Montevideo, Uruguay, consisting of measurements of mesiodistal diameter and height gingivoincisal of the canines and intercanine distance. The data is analyzed using two unsupervised classification methods using hierarchical methods (Ward's algorithm), and non-hierarchical (K Means), being able to establish four or five clusters, well differentiated, according to the variables considered. It is concluded that the typification of the canines and intercanine distance, allowed proposing the existence of an odontometric differentiation by sex.
