Abstract

180. Eldorado Broad-nosed Bat Platyrrhinus aurarius French: Sténoderme d’El Dorado / German: Eldorado-Breitnasenfledermaus / Spanish: Platirrino de El Dorado Taxonomy. Vampyrops aurarius Handley & Ferris, 1972, “at Km 125, 1,000 m, 85 km SSE El Dorado, Bolivar, Venezuela.” This species is monotypic. Distribution. S Venezuela, WC Guyana, and outlying Mts in C Suriname and N Brazil (Amazonas State). Descriptive notes. Head-body 71-84 mm (tailless), ear 15-23 mm, hindfoot 9-17 mm, forearm 49-56 mm; weight 24-48 g. The Eldorado Broad-nosed Batis one of the largest species of Platyrrhinus. Dorsal pelage is glossy blackish brown; hairs have four bands, with basesslightly paler. Ventral pelage is duller dark brown. Back has distinctive medial white stripe, and face has lateral buffy stripes. Noseleaf, ears, and wing membranes are blackish; legs, feet, and uropatagium are fuscous. Posterior edge of relatively narrow uropatagium has fringe of bufty hairs. I' are long, narrow, and well developed. M' parastyle is absent, M' metastyle is present, and there are no stylid cusps on anterior or posterior faces of main cone of P,. Habitat. Commonly subtropical wet forest habitats, including upland rainforests, at elevations of 400-2100 m elevation. Food and Feeding. The Eldorado Broad-nosed Batis frugivorous. Breeding. Pregnant Eldorado Broad-nosed Bats were found in February-March, May, and October—January; lactating females in March and July; and subadults in July and November. Activity patterns. The Eldorado Broad-nosed Bat roosts in shallow caves and rocky overhangs. Movements, Home range and Social organization. No information. Status and Conservation.
