Abstract

Osbornellus bitelum Domínguez & Godoy, sp. nov. (Figs. 41a–41e) Description. Length: 6.2–6.4 mm. Member of the O. rarus group (Fig. 1b). Similar to O. lanceolatus. Male genitalia: Pygofer about 1.5 times as long as greatest width, moderately projected posteriorly, apex wide and concave; macrosetae long, few in number, dispersed along apical third of pygofer (Fig.41a). Valve with margins rounded, slightly curved in anterior half. Plates long, base wide, tapered to pointed apex, setae plumose (Fig. 41b). Style with apophysis long, straight, apex truncate (Fig. 41c). Aedeagus in ventral view wide at base, lateral margins curved; shaft long, narrow, straight, same length as ventral processes, apex pointed; lateral extension of dorsal projection sharply tapered at tips (Fig. 41d). Ventral processes arising at one-fourth of the distance along the aedeagus, tapered, narrowed one-third of the way along their length, apex pointed. In lateral view aedeagus with wide base, curved, lateral side slightly curved; shaft wide, with a small ventral notch before the apex, apex rounded, curved at the base then straight, slightly shorter than ventral processes; dorsal projection long, slender, curved caudad. Gonopore subapical. Ventral processes close to shaft, straight, narrow, apices pointed (Fig. 41e). Diagnosis. Very similar externally to O. rarus, and in genitalia similar to O. lanceolatus. In ventral view the aedeagus of O. bitelum has the base wider than in O. lanceolatus, and the ventral processes are slightly separated. In ventral view the aedeagus of O. bitelum has the base narrower than in O. lanceolatus and ventral processes closer together. In O. rarus the lobe of the ventral processes is absent. Distribution: Known only from Costa Rica; 2100–2600 m. Etymology. This species is named for the two lance-like processes.
