Abstract

Summary This article presents a distance training system implemented since 2015 for paramedics in Switzerland. Its aim is to master and then certify a complex medical procedure, an intraosseous needle insertion. However, if distance learning and teaching are one thing, assessing for certification a professional skill or procedure without seeing the person face to face is another problem. How can a high level of care be guaranteed despite the distance ; how can the strict standards imposed by the medical community be certified; how can all the health and safety constraints of this very invasive medical procedure be respected? The distance training system presented, takes up these challenges as a first step. Next, it is modified in to two stages ; firstly, the introduction of a self-assessment phase ; secondly, the use of assessment criteria support a formative assessment process added to a certification dimension. All the proccess described in these article challenge equally the role of trainers and trainees.
