Vicia sativa Linnaeus var. nigra Linnaeus, Species Plantarum, ed. 2, 2: 1037. 1763, nom. illeg. RCN: 5415. Replaced synonym: Vicia sativa var. angustifolia L. (1755). Lectotype (Lassen in Turland & Jarvis in Taxon 46: 483. 1997): [icon] " Vicia angustifolia " in Rivinus, Ordo Pl. Fl. Tetrapetal.: t. 55. 1691. - Epitype (Lassen in Turland & Jarvis in Taxon 46: 483. 1997): Sweden. Skåne: Tjörnarp sn 400m NO kvarnen, RUBIN 3D 2c 07 47, 10 Jun 1992, S. Karlsson 921771 (LD). Current name: Vicia sativa L. subsp. nigra Ehrh. (Fabaceae: Faboideae). Note: A superfluous name because Linnaeus included in the protologue all the elements eligible as the lectotype of the earlier var. angustifolia (Arts 52.1 & 52.2). Romero Zarco (in Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 56: 179. 1998) appears to treat the name as legitimate, and also proposes a different lectotype.
