Social networks and ICTs in a precautionary socio-environmental conflicts. The case of the movement "Not to the phosphate factory in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil (in Spanish)

Abstract

This work outlines the articulation of social movements against mega extraction projects through the use of social networks and new Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) in a context of precautionary socioenvironmental conflict. For this purpose, theoretical elements of social networks and ICTs were addressed, in order to understand the dynamics among them, as well as their relationship with what we call precautionary socioenvironmental conflicts. To complement this analysis, we exposed the case of resistance of the Community of Anitápolis against a phosphorus extraction project, in the state of Santa Catarina - Brazil. The results of this work show the importance of the use of these communication tools for the articulation and consolidation of the Não à Fosfateira movement, which lead to the temporary abandonment of the project, after several actions of resistance through ICTs and the participation of non-local allies.
