The book is the outcome of the author’s Master thesis, titled “Elderly people, their families and disasters: a discussion in the interface between sociology and gerontology, focused on the case of Teresopolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil”, Master in Environmental Engineering, University of Sao Paulo, Sao Carlos, Sao Paulo, Brazil, 2015. Thesis was awarded the 2016 edition of the WATERLAT-GOBACIT Network Student Prize (http://waterlat.org/waterlat-student-prize/2016-prize/). The topic addressed in the book corresponds to the themes of the Network’s Thematic Area 8, dealing with Water-Related Disasters (http://waterlat.org/thematic-areas/ta8/). O livro é resultado da dissertação de mestrado da autora, titulada “Idoso, família e desastres: uma discussão na interface da sociologia e gerontologia a partir da análise do caso de Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil”, Mestrado em Engenharia Ambiental, Universidade de São Paulo, São Carlos, São Paulo, Brasil, 2015. A dissertação foi ganhadora da edição 2016 do Prêmio da Rede WATERLAT-GOBACIT para estudantes (http://waterlat.org/pt/waterlat-student-prize/premio2016/).
