In the present work, the layered structure oxide LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM 811) is synthesized by sol-gel auto combustion and solid state reaction methods. Microstructural and optical properties are investigated by XRD, FE-SEM with EDS, FT-IR and bonding nature studies. Characterization of the crystalline powders, phase identification, particle size examination, and morphological studies are done using XRD and FE-SEM. From FT-IR and UV-NIR studies, vibrational bands are identified in the range of 400-2000 cm-1 representing the MO2 (M = Ni, Co & Mn) layers
